Jorge Luzzi is the new APOGERIS chairman

Jorge Luzzi is the new chairman of APOGERIS – Associação Portuguesa de Gestão de Riscos e Seguros (Portuguese Risk and Insurance Management Association). He is considered one of the world’s leading risk management experts and, as leader of the association, has a goal to promote a greater culture of risk protection in Portugal, adding value to the role of risk managers.

Jorge Luzzi says: "Our economies and companies face growing and diversified risks, making it necessary to mitigate the threats they are exposed to and safeguard against their potential effects. Alongside insurers and insurance brokers, consultants and risk managers play a key role in this process.” He adds: "The role of the risk manager is difficult; it requires extensive knowledge and an ability to anticipate scenarios. This puts us at the forefront of trends and innovation.”

Jorge combines his role with the presidency of Herco Global – a company specialising in risk consulting and analysis and part of the MDS Group – and a risk management leadership position at Brokerslink, a global broking company which has MDS as a key shareholder. 

APOGERIS is a non-profit association that aims to promote the benefits of risk management and insurance to businesses and society. It was established in 2002 with support from José Manuel Dias da Fonseca, CEO of the MDS Group, who led it until 2017. Among the association’s initiatives is the hosting in 2005 of FERMA’s Forum, the largest risk management forum ever held in Portugal which was attended by some 1,500 delegates from over 20 countries. 

Jorge was born in Buenos Aires in 1954 and began his career in risk management in 1971. He joined Pirelli in 1988, and, in 2005, became the Group’s global risk management director.

During his career he has continued to acquire new skills in the field of risk management and has been instrumental in promoting the profession worldwide. Jorge’s involvement with the sector’s associations began in Brazil where he led the Brazilian and South American Risk Management Associations. He also presided over IFRIMA – International Federation of Risk & Insurance Management - and from October 2011 to October 2013, FERMA – Federation of European Risk Management Associations. He presently leads APOGERIS –Associação Portuguesa de Gestão de Riscos e Seguros (Portuguese Risk and Insurance Management Association).

Among the many awards Jorge has received are; the notification of honour by the Congress of São Paulo for his contribution to the development of risk management in the country, the 2002 RIMS Goodell Award for Lifetime Achievement in the area of risk management and the Alarys Award for Outstanding Achievement in risk management.
Jorge has a degree in Business Administration and Economics from the University of Belgrano, a degree from ECEA and a postgraduate degree from Academia Nacional de Seguros e Previdência.

Created in 2002, it is headquartered in Porto and has an objective to ‘promote and develop risk administration and management, as a scientific and research activity, benefiting its members and society at large’.
